"Speak now or hold your peace forever" is a phrase
that many soap operas have manipulated from time to time. After hearing this,
we expect some dramatic turn in the wedding ceremony. But even though nowadays
we imagine a furious ex speaking in response to it, it has had quite practical
meaning in the past.
We at Bright Side thought it would be interesting to see why
someone might object to the wedding and share some real people's stories about
it.
Your wedding could be canceled.(What happens if someone objects at a wedding)
This tradition was started by the Catholic Church itself and
goes back to the 12th century. During those times, it was a real way to ensure
the legitimacy of a union before it was made official. The planned marriage was
publicly announced before the date so that the community would have ample time
to come up with any information.
Objection may include things like being already married to
another person, pre-celibacy to the church or subjugating without parental
consent, or undermining blood relations.
Nowadays, any legal hurdles of marriage are properly checked
before the actual ceremony. However, for example, in New Zealand, you can still
file an objection to someone's marriage if you believe that there are legal
reasons that one should not marry.
It may turn into a scandal.
Even though the phrase in modern weddings, "Speak now
or keep your peace forever", is a tribute to this tradition, sometimes
people use it as an attempt to speak up and stop marriage. Here are some
stories of Reddit users who took part in weddings where it happened:
Groom self. He stands there and starts crying and tells the
bride in front of everyone that he had fallen in love with her some time ago,
but he did not know how to break it. It was extremely uncomfortable, they
forced the two out, and 10 minutes later came back out and got married, as she
clearly stated that she was pregnant. They are still with 3 children. ©

I was the best man at a wedding, and the groom's older
sister decided to play a joke and said "I have an objection" then
started colliding. The groom's mother stands up, tells her that this is an
inappropriate joke, and then tells her to go home. This mother still refuses to
talk to her daughter after 4 years. © PM_ME_UR_PHOBIAS
You may find out that you have a secret admirer.
Someone may want to interrupt the marriage, but may not wish
to reveal some important things, but may wish to express their displeasure
about the whole thing. Of course, when 2 adults are sure of their choice that
they have decided to marry, no one, even someone who is close to them, can
impress them. The only thing that can happen is that it will harm their
relationship. And here are some real stories about it:
Witnessed this a few months ago. The random guest stood up
and proceeded to basically declare his love for the bride and to recreate his
heart, saying that it should depend on the change of the day. The whole room
became silent. The bride turned red with shame and the groom turned red with
anger. The best man immediately called the DJ / MC to play the music. It all
happened in front of the wife of that random guest. © rubber_band_ball
The best man at my step sister's wedding did this. It was a
big wedding and the rehearsal was bigger than a lot of weddings. The minister
was going on a vow as soon as possible as to what to do.After that When he said
something about the objections, the best man was interrupted, saying that he
would have to put a stop to it. He was in love with the bride and is sure to
have felt the same way. My step sister and everyone else were horrified. This
caused a lot of chaos and confusion. As far as I know, after that, neither the
bride nor the groom spoke to her again. © chadspdx

One can use this occasion to spice things up and make the ceremony
more unforgettable. It really depends on the newlyweds' sense of humor. Here
are some examples from witnesses:
My father was getting married to his third wife. My step
brother and that i were at the marriage party. He was 6 years old, I was 10. The
preacher asks if anything and my brother raise their hands so politely. My dad
asks why, and my stepbrother replies, "Because i would like you to vow to
travel fishing whenever you would like me." © Southern_Kisses.
It actually happened at my sister's wedding. My
brother-in-law's boss decided to pipe up and shout, "Yes mate, I'll speak
my peace ... Oh sorry friend, wrong marriage!" Everyone present there
laughed, except my brother-in-law, who was quite surprised. © Redcap1981
Nobody will care.(What happens if someone objects at a wedding)
However, in most cases, people are so excited about their
ceremony that they would prefer not to pay attention to anyone's shout. And
this seems reasonable enough, take a look:
I attended a marriage as a guest of a loved one and when the
pastor said this, the doors to the sanctum were open and a person appeared and
began saying "I do!" - But do you know two giant ushers, one of them
who was my date, quickly grabbed the person before he could say anything but
"uhhh" under arms and literally lifted him off the ground and took
him out. the wedding continued as was common . The boy who came out was the
bride's ex. The strangest view ever. © removed.
I went to my elder brother's wedding when I was 5 years old.
He said that the whole "to speak" speech was made and before he was
corrected, the little 5-year-old said to me, "I'm fine!" And everyone
turned to me. I was silent because I did not know what would happen. After that
My father asked me "Well, why do you mind?" And then I said, "I
didn't know what would happenat that time if I did" and I was immediately
seated. © Camero32
